When Cakes Collapse and You Just Gotta Breathe

Welcome back to The Crumb Files—where I share a little behind-the-scenes chaos, cottage bakery-style.

Running a home bakery sounds dreamy, right? And most days, it is—flour-dusted counters, the smell of fresh bread, piping frosting while my teens casually wander through the kitchen pretending they’re not angling for a cookie.

But sometimes? It’s a total mess.

This week, I had a cake completely fall apart on me. Looked perfect when I pulled it from the fridge... then boom. It collapsed like it just gave up on life right in my hands. My stomach dropped. Cue the inner meltdown.

But here’s the silver lining—the customer was so kind. They took the refund with total grace and even sent a kind message. That understanding meant the world in a moment when I really needed it.

Because the truth is: this job isn’t always sunshine and sprinkles. It’s late nights, early mornings, juggling life and orders, and praying your buttercream doesn’t betray you. When things go sideways, it hits deep because this work is personal.

But there are still those sweet moments—the regular who messages, “Those rolls didn’t last a day,” or the customer who says your cookie brought back a childhood memory. That’s the magic. That’s why I keep showing up, even when the flour’s flying and everything feels like a mess.

So if your week’s been anything but picture-perfect—breathe. Step back. Eat the cookie 🍪 (always eat the cookie). You’re not alone.

Until next time, thanks for being here and cheering me on through the crumbles.

With love (and frosting somewhere it shouldn’t be 🤣)

Ashlee
